First Update of 2016

by Panadero - April 24, 2016 11:29:59 AM MST

I feel like I have to apologize again for the lack of updates. My time to watch anime has greatly decreased lately, and often when I have had the time, I haven't been in the mood. I don't know if and when things will pick up but I still have a huge backlog of stuff to watch so it's not as if I'm short on material. That said, let's go over today's update:

First up is the wonderful, melodramatic, and wonderfully melodramatic Dear Brother, focusing on the various dramas an emotional girl deals with as she is selected to join an elite group in school called The Sorority. The show is so unabashedly soap opera-like, yet I still couldn't help but get hooked on it. There's something about longer series from the early 90s that really felt like they did character development in a very satisfying way.

Next we have the very charming Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun, a recent series that follows the life of a student in her art club who unintentionally gets roped into assisting with manga production with the guy she has a crush on. The cast was both funny and endearing, playing on and defying common tropes. Definitely recommended as a relaxing show to binge.

We also have the most recent KyoAni series, Myriad Colors Phantom World, a show I have mixed feelings about. In fact, I have the same kind of mixed feelings about a number of KyoAni shows that tread a bit outside of their traditional strengths, such as Beyond the Border and Amagi Brilliant Park: I'm happy that they're expanding their repertoire by covering different genres and story tones, but there's something about them that doesn't get me deeply emotionally invested in them like I can with shows such as K-On, Free, Sound! Euphonium, and the like. That said, there was enough in this series to feel like a second season would substantially help me get more invested in the world and characters. As it is, I'm much more excited for the second season of Euphonium in October.

Lastly, I added a new character who appears in the second season of Is the Order a Rabbit?.
