Such is Fate..../stay night

by Prince Io - October 25, 2009 2:46:00 PM MST

Fate/stay night is a series based off a Japanese adult visual novel game. It involves Masters, powerful mages, who can summon 'Servants', the reincarnations of legendary souls from all across time. The Servants are summoned to fight in the Holy Grail War, a fight between seven Masters and their Servants, the victor earning the Holy Grail. What exactly the Grail offers isn't entirely clear. The series started off a bit slow for me and the protagonist really grated on me for the first third of the series (I really considered him to be a moron), but eventually he turned a corner and I accepted who he was. The story isn't the deepest, but it's interesting enough especially when carried by the intriguing characters within. Saber, the main Servant the series focuses on, has a past that's slowly revealed and somewhat tragic. Shiro, annoying at first, eventually realizes his limitations and why Saber does what she does and isn't so annoying anymore (or at least I tell myself this). The rest of the characters, human or otherwise, aren't very deep, but they're all different enough from each other that you feel an independence from them. I wish we learned a bit more about the eventual antagonist as he's a pretty big badass, as is true to form with shows like this, but all in all Fate/stay night was more entertaining than I had thought it would be.

And now there are seven fateful young ladies available for your voting. Don't keep them waiting!
